DUNCAN —
It may come from knowledge and hard work, or it may just be in their DNA, but whatever the reason, the Roddy family knows how to throw things a long way.
Duncan junior Kevin Roddy and seventh-grader Connor Roddy recently wrapped up an impressive summer, spent throwing shot put and discus at AAU and USA Track & Field events around the country, collecting plenty of hardware at each.
The brothers, whose father Craig Roddy was a thrower for Oklahoma State, got their decorated summer off and rolling in June as Kevin broke the meet record in the shot put at the USATF Oklahoma Association Junior Olympic Championship with a throw of 54 feet, 2.5 inches before setting a personal best in the AAU National Qualifier with a throw of 55-11.
In mid July, Kevin and Connor went to Orlando, Fl., to take part in the AAU Club National/ESPN Rise Games. Kevin placed second in the Intermediate Division discus with a throw of 151-06, and second in the shot put at 54-06.
Connor, meanwhile, won the Sub-Youth 13 Division discus title with a throw of 115-04. Connor, who earned the title of AAU All-American, placed third in the shot put, hurling the orb 36-01.
The duo advanced to the AAU Junior Olympics, heading to Houston for the event which ran from July 30 to Aug. 4. Kevin took third in the discus, covering 162-02, and third in the shot put at 54-0. Connor earned a spot on the podium as he finished eighth in the discus with a personal record of 132-05.
After the impressive summer, coupled with their strong showings during the high school season, Kevin was named a National Elite youth All-American in the shot put and discus, and Conner was named to the National Elite youth Honor Roll for discus.
