DUNCAN —
Expect nothing and be ready for anything.
That’s the name of the game when it comes to the high school basketball playoffs.
But for Kenny Bare and the No. 5 Velma-Alma Comets, it’s nothing new for them at this point in the season.
Tonight will see V-A take on Wetumka at 8 p.m. from Macomb High School in the first round of the regional tournament.
While most of the state had Agra penciled into face the Comets, coach Bare said he wasn’t surprised when he learned about WHS winning districts over the Bearcats.
“Looking at scores and rankings then you would have expected Agra to advance,” he said. “But, once I saw Wetumka on film and got a view of how athletic they are, then it didn’t really surprise me that much. Then again, that’s the problem with going northeast in the brackets is that you don’t know much about the teams you are facing.”
Should the Comets prevail, a meeting with either No. 11 Pond Creek-Hunter or Oaks Mission awaits in the regional championship contest.
However, before V-A can start thinking about a berth in the area tournament it must first overcome an athletic Wetumka squad that boasts multiple players over six feet tall.
“They’re (Wetumka) very athletic and have some really solid guard play,” Bare said. “I know for a fact we have a challenge on our hands. From what I have heard they don’t seem like a team that runs a fast paced style of offense either. We’re more focused on what we can do. This is not a do or die game, but the longer you can stay in the winner’s bracket, the easier the journey is for everyone.”
Meanwhile at 6:30 p.m. from Macomb High School, head coach Jerry Garrett and his Lady Comets (18-6) will have their hands full as they look for an upset against No. 9 New Lima (21-9) in their first round regional contest.
A victory will see the Lady Comets meet either Pond Creek-Hunter or Oaks Mission in the regional championship game Saturday night from Agra High School.
