Davis survives Indians rally to claim win

COMANCHE — Two words could describe Comanche’s game against Davis Tuesday night: Missed Opportunities.

After storming back to within one point of the Wolves at 34-33 going into halftime, CHS failed to capitalize in the second half as a late comeback fell short and Davis claimed a 71-65 victory.

With 19 seconds left in regulation, the Indians were within four points at 69-65 but a missed layup attempt combined with a rebound by Davis spelled the end of Comanche’s comeback hopes.

However, it was a rough third quarter that hindered the Indians before that moment.

Following a strong first half performance, the Indians were outscored 20-7 in the third as the Wolves used a fast-paced offense and smothering defense to cool down the hot-shooting Indians and increase their lead.

Comanche’s only lead of the first half came at 2-0 with 7:28 remaining in the first quarter, before Davis snatched it right back and never let it go.

At the end of the first quarter, DHS held a 21-14 lead over the Indians, but there was a feeling inside Tommy D. Weast Gymnasium that Comanche was about to fight back.

And so it was as the Indians slowly but surely chipped away at the Wolves lead with fast-break points and turnovers.

But, the one thing the Indians couldn’t overcome on the night was poor free throw shooting along with outside shooting.

On the evening, CHS finished 18-of-32 from the free throw line, to go with a 5-of-19 performance from outside the arc, contrary to Davis who turned in a 16-of-24 performance from the charity stripe.

Garrett Morrow turned in another solid effort on the night as he finished just two steals shy of a triple-double. He did finish the game with 20 points to go with 16 rebounds.

Dalton Wood finished with 12 points on the night, with Braden Ledford scoring 10 points.

Zach Young added nine points for the Indians (8-13), with Grant Jones putting in six points.

Mason Taylor scored five points in the contest.

Davis (4-7) was led by Dillon Jones who led all scorers with 24 points, followed by Brad Hetherington with 13 points.

Blake Summers scored 12 points on the night, with Michael Nowden putting in eight points.

Comanche will be back at home Friday night for a matchup against Tishomingo at 8 p.m.
