DUNCAN —
When the Duncan Demons look around the landscape, they don’t see any truly dominant teams in Class 5A, and they know the door is open if they can make strides in the second half of the season.
“There’s nobody that is head and shoulders above everyone else,” Duncan coach Mikel Davison said. “MacArthur was No. 6 and we could have just as easily beaten them as they beat us.”
The season, as the Demons predicted, has been up and down to this point, though the progress has been steady. Duncan (5-5) hopes to make even more strides as they head to Ada today for the start of the three-day East Central Oklahoma Classic.
“We want to win, don’t get me wrong, but what we really want is to improve,” Davison said. “We need to be challenged at this point in the season and this is going to be a challenge.”
The challenge begins at 2:30 p.m. as the Demons open against Ponca City. Duncan comes in as the No. 2 seed in the tournament, while Ponca City is seventh.
“Ponca is going to be a team that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes,” Davison said. “It is going to be a good match for us.”
Waiting for Duncan in the second round will be the winner of No. 3 seed Choctaw and No. 8 Shawnee.
On the top half of the bracket are No. 1 Stillwater vs. No. 8 Durant, and No. 4 Sapulpa vs. No. 5 Ada.
“It’s a pretty tough field,” Davison said. “It’s just a really solid group of teams.”
The Demons finished fourth in the tournament last year, winning their opening round game to Ponca City before falling to Stillwater in the semifinals and Sapulpa in the third-place game.
