DUNCAN —
With shots refusing to fall and Apache quickly closing in, the Velma-Alma girls had to regroup if they wanted to stay in the winner’s bracket of the Black Diamond Tournament.
After scoring just two points in the third quarter the Lady Comets did regroup and closed strong in the fourth quarter to hold off Apache, 48-43 in their first-round game Tuesday in Rush Springs.
“We didn’t shoot well tonight and (Apache) was a team that played extremely hard and we couldn’t put them away,” Velma-Alma coach Jerry Garrett said. “We finally started making plays. We realized we’d better play or we were about to get beat.”
The Lady Comets (8-3) broke free from a 10-10 tie at the end of the first quarter to go up 26-20 at halftime before the lead shrunk to 28-27 going into the fourth quarter.
Senior Kylee Saville led Velma-Alma with 19 points, while junior Teddi Southeland had 12 and freshman Callin Wright added nine.
The Lady Comets advance to Thursday’s semifinals where it will play the winner of Tuesday’s late girls’ game between Elmore City-Pernell and Rush Springs.
