Marlow girls top Lady Indians

COMANCHE — Normally when a team makes more than half its free throws, there’s a good chance it can win the game.

But, when the free throws are the only points your scoring, it can present a problem.

This was the dilemma facing the Comanche Lady Indians Saturday night at home against Marlow, as the Lady Outlaws managed to frustrate CHS and hold on for a 40-30 victory, despite the Lady Indians going 17-for-30 from the free throw line on the night.

“If you don’t make shots then it always looks bad,” Marlow coach Kirk Harris said. “We’ve got to shoot the ball better and run our pressure defense better. We did play hard and we’ll take the win. Offensively though, I was very disappointed with our execution in the first half. We wanted to come out of the break with two wins, but right now we’ll take any win we can get.”

Up until the 2:03 mark of the second quarter, Comanche’s only points had come from the free throw line.

A three-point basket by Baylee Morgan made it a 20-13 game at that point, but the big difference on the evening was the Lady Outlaws ability to score baskets along with free throws.

“Marlow is a team that picks you up from about half court and pressures you,” Comanche coach Sean Hushbeck said. “We didn’t get a lot of good set your feet type shots. We were being aggressive and getting to the line a lot. For us to play them within 10, that says a lot about these girls.”

To their credit, the Lady Indians made things interesting near the end of the game as CHS hit consecutive three-point baskets to cut the Lady Outlaws lead to 10 points, but by that time it was too little too late for Comanche.

In a low scoring first quarter, Marlow held a 9-6 lead going into the second before leading 20-13 going into halftime.

MHS picked up the tempo in the third as the Lady Indians struggled to adjust as the Lady Outlaws led 35-15 heading into the fourth.

Leading the scoring on the night for the Lady Outlaws (3-6) was Ashley O’Dell with 13 points and seven rebounds. Avery Walker was close behind with 12 points and three rebounds. Tory Nations added eight points and six rebounds in the contest.

Comanche (2-6) was paced by Payge Graham who totaled 13 points and eight rebounds on the night.

Hannah Suson, Jenny Simpson, Baylee Morgan, Jacey Morgan and Brianna Robinson all scored three points in the game.
