Deer Creek — The Duncan Lady Demon tennis team made short work of the competition at Deer Creek, rolling to wins in all four divisions to take the overall title with 36 points. The team that finished closest to Duncan was its junior varsity, which had 21. Edmond North placed third and Guthrie fourth at the mid-week tournament.
“I wish it would have been better competition but we got to play again,” Duncan coach Phil Barnes said. “I was real pleased with our J.V. kids. They had a good day.”
Melanie Barnes ran through the competition in No. 1 singles like a hot knife through butter, winning all three of her matches 6-0, 6-0. Her final win of the tournament came against Shawnee Smith of Guthrie. Alyssa Rue finished fourth for the J.V. in No. 1 singles. She opened with a win and fell to Smith in the semifinals 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Rue came back with a 7-6, 6-2 win to reach the third-place match where she dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
Brittany Toone was nearly as dominant as Barnes in No. 2 singles, clearing out the competition without a serious threat. The freshman won her first two matches 6-0, 6-0 and won the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alexis Browning of the Bishop McGuinness J.V. Hooker suited up for the Duncan J.V. and dropped her first two matches before winning 6-0, 6-1 to claim seventh.
Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles were dominated by Duncan as the varsity and J.V. teams faced off in the finals. In No. 1 doubles, Taylor Spradlin and Kate LeValley opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win and a 6-0, 6-1 win to advance to the finals where they knocked off Katherine Jeffords and Samantha Cassidy 6-1, 6-1. Jeffords and Cassidy reached the finals with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Oklahoma Christian School and a 6-2, 6-3 win over Guthrie.
Haley Hartzell and Kelsey LeValley breezed through the competition in their first two matches in No. 2 doubles, picking up a couple of 6-0, 6-0 wins. In the finals, they took a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Brooklyn Scott and Britton Scott. The Scott sisters opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Deer Creek and beat Oklahoma Christian School 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Demons going after dual state title
For many years, Duncan High School has been known for its proud wrestling tradition. On Saturday the Demons will have a chance to add to that growing tradition as they take part in the Class 5A Dual State Championships, which will be held at Yukon High School starting on Saturday at noon.

Senior night for Duncan

At 6:30 p.m. the No. 13 Duncan Lady Demons (15-7) will take to the floor against Ardmore (1-18) on Senior Night. Seniors Ashley Gonzalez, Hannah Allen, Dani Jo St. Clair, Britton and Brooklyn Scott along with D’Shala Culberson and Jamesia Milton will be honored during the contest. -
Indians prepare for dual state
With the second weekend in February comes the first part of the busiest three weeks on the high school wrestling schedule, Dual State.
The Comanche Indians will be making the three hour drive to Cushing, looking to advance past the semi-finals, something which has eluded them the past two years thanks to Perry. -

After a tough loss on the road last Friday night against Lawton MacArthur, it seemed the Duncan Demons needed a boost to get themselves going for the last week of the season. DHS had its sights set on using the Altus Bulldogs as the tool for their motivation Tuesday night at Duncan Gymnasium.

Lady Outlaws smother Rush Springs, 38-28
It wasn’t one of Marlow’s best offensive performances of the season. Luckily it was one of the Lady Outlaws best defensive showings.
For only the third time this season, Marlow held an opponent to fewer than 30 points and the Lady Outlaws topped the visiting Rush Springs Lady Redskins, 38-28. -

There is a saying, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” For the Duncan Lady Demons, a rematch against Altus at Duncan Gymnasium on a chilly evening seemed like the perfect motivation to help DHS avoid a two-game losing streak Tuesday night.
