The Duncan Banner
It has been a decorated season for the Duncan boys’ track team, having won the team title at four meets and finishing second at two others. They wouldn’t mind adding one more trophy to their collection before the region championships, though.
The Demons will get their chance Thursday as they host the Quanah Cox Invitational in their final tune-up for region.
“We are right where we need to be,” Duncan coach Todd Ledford said. “We haven’t been beat by a (Class) 5A team this year, and the kids are performing well week in and week out.”
The Demons have remained healthy all season — something they hope doesn’t change Thursday — and have racked up event titles, dominating in the field events as well as midrange and long distance running.
They will try to keep that up against a strong field of seven schools, consisting of their former conference rivals in a meet that is often referred to as the Old Conference Meet.
“We don’t have a conference that we are inside anymore, but all of the schools in our old conference decided to keep competing against each other,” Ledford said.
Duncan will certainly be one of the favorites in the meet but Lawton High will also likely be in the mix for the team championship.
“I really think that we are the favorites, but Lawton High will be up there with us,” said Ledford, whose squad finished behind Lawton early in the season but beat Lawton in their next meeting. “Lawton High is just loaded in springs and we’ve got a lot of middle distance guys. They are going to get their points and we’ll get ours. We’ll see who can outlast the other.”
The meet is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at Halliburton Stadium.
