CENTRAL HIGH —
If there was one thing the Central High Bronchos learned Thursday night, it was big things come in small packages.
Alex quarterback Jose Ochoa, who stands at 5’2” turned out to be the biggest thorn in the side of Central High as he ran for 68 yards, to go with three touchdowns, including a 50-yard kickoff return as the Longhorns broke open a 16-12 game in the second half for a 44-18 victory.
“For a half we played them (Alex) toe-to-toe,” Central High coach Darren Lamar said. “We just weren’t able to sustain it. I’ve been waiting for four quarters from this team against a good opponent. I’m disappointed with the way we finished. We’re a better team than this and capable of more.”
In the second half, it was all about the big plays from the guys in orange and black.
First, it was a 50-yard touchdown run from Reese Mitchell, which made the score 30-12 at the end of the third quarter.
Then, Michael Wilcox collected a 40-yard touchdown run to all but seal the game at 36-12, with 6:51 left in the fourth.
It was a far cry from the strong performance the Bronchos gave in the first half, which saw them come back from 16-0 down to cut the lead to 16-12 going into halftime.
Ashton Wright and Kevin Harris got Central High within striking distance with scores from 7 and 4 yards out respectively.
Alex got on the board through a safety in the first quarter, before Ochoa’s kickoff return on the ensuing free kick gave the Longhorns a 10-0 lead at the 7:11 mark.
Ochoa then found Ryland Ketchum to make it 16-0 in the second quarter.
Kade Taylor pulled a score back for the Bronchos in the fourth, with a 62-yard touchdown pass to John Repp.
Mitchell had the Longhorns other touchdown on the evening.
Wright had 17 carries on the evening for 72 yards and one touchdown, while Harris finished the evening with 22 carries for 142 yards and one touchdown.
With the loss Central High drops to 5-3 overall, and 4-3 in district play. Alex improves to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in district play.
