EHS girls roll past Ringling

EMPIRE — Normally when a teammate is injured, there’s usually someone there to pick up the slack.

For the Empire Lady Bulldogs though, they chose to have the whole team step up and carry the load.

With starter Kaelyn Allensworth unavailable Friday night due to injury, four Lady Bulldog players scored in double figures as EHS rolled over Ringling 63-44.

“I was very pleased with the consistency we had offensively tonight,” Empire coach Jason Allensworth said. “It wasn’t just one or two, it was everyone sharing in the wealth. McKenna Collins and Sherre Dewey both made tremendous efforts for us tonight. When somebody goes down we always have someone ready to step in and take the reigns.”

Things got a little interesting at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter when the Lady Blue Devils cut the Empire lead to six points at 40-34, after EHS had held an 11 point lead at halftime at 32-21.

However, the Lady Bulldogs responded to the challenge and managed to reel off a 10-3 run to finish the third quarter leading 50-37.

“When they (Ringling) did cut it to six points, our girls responded,” Allensworth said. “That’s something that had kind of bit us in the previous stretch of games. I think it shows a lot of maturity on our girls part seeing how they responded.”

Ringling couldn’t get much closer in the fourth quarter as the Lady Bulldogs balanced offensive attack was too much to handle on the evening.

Empire held a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, as Ringling struggled to find a groove on the offensive end.

“We went in a losing streak for a little bit and got down,” freshman guard Sherre Dewey said. “It feels really good though getting two good wins this week. “I was really nervous when we first started, because I’ve never started in high school. But, the girls calmed me down and told me to go out there and play my best and that’s what I did.”

Dewey made the most of her first starting performance as she finished with 11 points on the night.

Melaina Yearby and Jessica Carney led the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs (13-8) as they each put in 14 points in the contest, with senior post player Ashlie Atkinson adding 13 points.

Alyssa George put in nine points on the evening, with McKenna Collins scoring two points.

Ringling was led by C-Leigh Butler with 13 points followed by Magan Cunningham with nine points. Ashley Murray and Bailey Tolliver each added seven points in the game.

Empire will have one last dress rehearsal before the playoffs begin as the Lady Bulldogs will celebrate senior night Monday night against Walters with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. from Bulldog Gymnasium.
