It’s no secret that the words of celebrities often hold more weight than those of more common people. And in Oklahoma, it’s hard to find any bigger celebrities than Oklahoma University football players.
Western Heights Baptist Church in Duncan hopes that the words of one former OU All-American are taken to heart this Sunday in their confines. The church will be welcoming Vince Carter, who is scheduled to speak at 10:50 a.m. to the congregation.
“He’ll just be speaking about the gospel,” said church secretary Telayna Brown-Wendt. “How he uses gospel to do his ministry.”
Carter, who was a four-year starting center and an All-American following his senior season in 2004, speaks at schools and is actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes program. That’s how Western Heights pastor Chris Percibal ran into Carter and first floated the idea of having the former Sooner come to Duncan.
Considering the place Sooner fans hold in their hearts for former OU football players, the church thinks Carter’s words could have a special impact.
“In our society, people listen to athletes,” Brown-Wendt said. “He’s a former OU player and All-American and he even played for the (NFL’s Oakland) Raiders for a while.”
The event is open to the public and will be followed by a “bean fellowship.”
“We’re hoping to maybe get a few more members in our church,” Brown-Wendt said, “and spread the gospel in Duncan and Stephens County.”

The tournament will include a field of 256 golfers, making up 128 teams. -
