Slow start, but DHS girls still on track

Headed to Chickasha Tourney today

DUNCAN — While the results haven’t been exactly what the Duncan Lady Demons would have hoped for to this point, they still feel they are on pace to be playing at a high level by the time the postseason rolls around.

“What I keep telling them is, this is a long season and it’s a long process,” Duncan coach Aaron Minor said. “The goal is to be competitive when we come to playoff time, and we’ve got four or five weeks for that.”

The Lady Demons certainly haven’t shied away from challenges this season, taking on highly touted squads nearly every week. Starting tomorrow, they will be faced with another big challenge as they face off with a tough field at the Chickasha Tournament.

“It’s supposed to be a pretty tough tournament,” Minor said. “Chickasha is playing well and then you’ve got MacArthur, Putnam City, Cache and Guthrie also in there and they are all pretty good teams.”

And Duncan will be diving right into the deep end as it opens up the tournament against the host school, Chickasha at 8 p.m.

“It will be a tough game,” Minor said. “Chickasha teams never like Duncan and every time they want to beat Duncan as bad as they can.”

The Lady Demons (2-8) come into the tournament looking to get a bad taste out of their mouths after taking a lopsided loss at home to Ada.

“Against Ada, I didn’t feel like we played as hard as we could,” Minor said. “I just want to see them play hard and play our best (in the tournament). If we do that, we should have a shot of winning every game.”

Minor said the team has made progress throughout the season, especially on defense, where they are learning to be more aggressive and incorporating more tasks, like traps.

The offense is also coming along, with both being aided by increased depth as the list of injured Lady Demons slowly shrinks.

“That has been a very big help,” Minor said of getting the injured players back. “Where it really helps is practice, where we can now go with two squads and play against each other. ... That’s helping us get a lot better at practice.”
