Comets cruise into second round of Black Diamond

RUSH SPRINGS — Velma-Alma went at Rush Springs with a hockey-style approach to substitutions, swapping out all five players midway through the quarter and then swapping back.

The idea was to keep everyone fresh so they could go at the Redskins with intensity. The result was a 72-31 win for the Comets in the first round of the Black Diamond Tournament on Monday.

“I thought we played well and our depth really tired them out,” Velma-Alma coach Kenny Bare said. “I wanted to keep the pressure up defensively, and we were able to do that.”

Junior Jaz Gayanich paced the No. 6 Comets (10-1) with 18 points, while senior Dallen Mercer had 13 points and senior Zac Cable recorded 10 points.

The Comets led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and 39-15 by halftime.

Velma-Alma, the defending champion, advances to Friday’s semifinals, where it will play the winner of tonight’s game between Elmore-Pernell and Apache.
