DUNCAN —
Area tennis players showed some hometown pride Friday and Saturday as they defended their home courts in Duncan.
Duncan residents took won three of 10 titles up for grabs at the Duncan First Bank & Trust Junior Open.
“I thought the tournament went really well,” tournament director and Duncan High School tennis coach Phil Barnes said. “We ended up having 74 kids, so it was a pretty big tournament.”
Alex Bowers, who won a state title in No. 2 singles this past season, nabbed a pair of first-place trophies at the USTA event as she won the 16-year-old singles title over Emily Faulkner of Oklahoma City in three sets before pairing up with Makenzie Rains to win the girls’ 16 doubles title, the only doubles bracket in the tournament.
Rains also made the finals of the 14-year-old division, losing in three sets to Isabella Dunlap of Edmond.
“Makenzie had a really good tournament and Alex probably played the best of anybody,” Barnes said.
Close behind Bowers in Barnes’ rankings was Andre Vuong.
After the Duncan 16-year-old won his age group’s title over DHS teammate Brant Davis, Vuong went up an age group Saturday to play in the 18-year-old division, where he fell in the championship match to Jeff Wren of Oklahoma City.
Grant Griffin of Edmond won the boys’ 14 singles title, while Daniel Haley of Edmond won the 12 singles title.
Abigail White of Coppell, Texas, defeated Duncan’s Brittany Toone in the semifinals before claiming the girls’ 18 singles crown.
Lora Boggs of Edmond won the girls’ 12 singles championship, while Lauren Heathcock of Edmond won the girls’ 10 singles title.
