DUNCAN — A big part of the Christmas season is spreading holiday joy and First Baptist Church will be doing their part by hosting “A 1940’s Christmas Homecoming” musical drama.

The First Family Choir, Youth Ensemble and drama will present the story of a soldier returning home to his family for Christmas amidst World War II at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at FBC. Partially set during a USO radio show in northern Italy at an army base, many 1940s musical favorites will be featured.

“The 1940’s Christmas Homecoming is our gift to you as we celebrate together the joy, the excitement and the sights and sounds of Christmas,” said David Leu, FBC minister of music who directs the production.

Featured will be big band, swing and jazz musical arrangements including “Here We Come a Caroling,” “This Christmas,” “Messiah Medley” and “Silent Night.” Additionally, Christmas favorites such as “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” will be included.

The choir is formed of about 45-50 people with the drama team comprised of about 10 people. Kyle Deboe plays the lead Eddie, who is trying to make it home to his family.

“The desire of everyone involved in this presentation is to share the most important person in our lives — the Lord Jesus Christ,” said Leu. “We pray that you will bring your family and friends to join us as we celebrate this glorious Christmas season.”

This year, the event is a dessert theater and those who attend will be surrounded by the aura of the 1940s with the dessert served, decorations and even the clothing of those in the drama team and choir.

FBC does a community Christmas program every year and it is always free and open to the public. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Highland Park to celebrate 60 years

It is said that it’s the people who are the church and not the building itself, so when a church celebrates a milestone, it is the people who rejoice over how long the place that brought them together has been there.

The congregation of Highland Park Baptist Church will celebrate the church’s 60th anniversary Sunday. Lunch will be served after the morning services and following the meal, they will host a Remembrance Service to honor the memory of members who have passed away during the last 10 years.

Members will also get to share their experiences in the church and the Highlanders Quartet will perform.
