CWU to impart power of prayer

World Day of Prayer gathering set for Friday

DUNCAN — Prayer has been part of the human experience for eons and many believe in its spiritual power, not the least of whom are the members of Duncan’s Church Women United.

On Friday, the women involved in CWU hope to extend that power far beyond Duncan, when the 2012 World Day of Prayer gathering is held at 9:30 a.m., at Westside Christian Church.

While the fellowship is being prepared by CWU, the worship and prayer service is open to people of all denominations throughout the area.

Being a part of the World Day of Prayer is nothing new for Church Women United.

It is one of the celebration events in which the group has opted to participate for many years past.

“I’ve lived in Duncan for 55 years and I’ve participated in it every year since I’ve been here,” said Pat Hale, a longtime member of CWU. “So, it’s been going on for at least that long.”

In order to prepare for the celebration, those who are registered to participate are sent a program guide that gives some information on the theme — which this year is, “Let Justice Prevail” — and recommends songs for worship. From there, each group decides what schedule to follow.

“Each church is responsible to do their own thing,” said Hale.

Every year, a different church is chosen to host the Duncan’s World Day of Prayer event, and the women of the church lead the program. One important aspect of the day is an opportunity to worship with people participants might not regularly see or share worship with.

“We get to fellowship with members of other churches, the ones you don’t see every Sunday,” Hale said. “It’s a great way to come together.”

The worship service for World Day of Prayer was prepared by Christian women of Malaysia. Christians all over the globe, including 170 countries and regions, gather on the first Friday in March each year to pray for peace and justice.

Through the World Day of Prayer, those who participate affirm that prayer and action are inseparable, and both have influence in the world. The motto of World Day of Prayer is: “Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action.”

Hale said that their group is aware that by participating they are worshiping and praying not only along side those of the Duncan community, but with Christians all around the world.

    It is said that it’s the people who are the church and not the building itself, so when a church celebrates a milestone, it is the people who rejoice over how long the place that brought them together has been there.
    The congregation of Highland Park Baptist Church will celebrate the church’s 60th anniversary Sunday. Lunch will be served after the morning services and following the meal, they will host a Remembrance Service to honor the memory of members who have passed away during the last 10 years. 
    Members will also get to share their experiences in the church and the Highlanders Quartet will perform.
