DUNCAN —
Tucked away in the southeast side of Duncan sits True Gospel Tabernacle. It is led by Suff. Bishop Sherman Tyler who also began the church.
Tyler, who spent his early years Indiana and Nebraska, came to Duncan 20 years ago from Tatums, where he was minister for a church.
He brought along his wife, Alice, their three biological children, Sherman Jr., Donald, and Christy, and their three adopted children, twins Quinette and Quinton, and Joshua.
The building that is now True Gospel once belonged to a different church, before Tyler bought it and began his church.
The current congregation is numbered around 100 people, and they have a missionary in Africa they support.
Tyler has a specific goal in mind for his church.
“I want to help bring people off the streets,” he said. “Our goal is to help the poor and needy.”
Saturday, Rev. Tyler and True Gospel are inviting the community to join them for a luncheon event they are calling a Super Seminar Service.
It begins at 11 a.m. and will feature guest soloist, Elizabeth Manous, as well as several speakers.
Arica Tyler’s subject will be “Stop, Look, and Listen,” Jerry William’s subject is “God Will Restore,” Rhonda Williams’ is “It’s Not About You,” and Sherman Tyler III will speak on, is “God’s Trying to Tell You Something.”
The keynote speakers are Donald and Marsha Tyler of Tulsa. Their sermon is called “I’m Not a Victim.”
The message they will be trying to get across is that whatever it is going on in your life, it is not because God is picking on you. They specifically reference the Biblical story of Job.
“People are always wondering why they are having to going through hard times,” Bishop Tyler said. “God is just setting them up for good things to come.”
Tyler said this event is something they try to do every year and the main purpose is to get people to church and hear what God has to say to them. Juanita Young, a pre-K teacher at Will Rogers and True Gospel member, agreed.
“We want to get souls saved,” she said.
“There are so many things happening in the world, like the weather right now, and we need to focus on Jesus.”
True Gospel is what Bishop Tyler calls “a church of all nations.” This means that the congregation is racially mixed and they want anyone and everyone to join them in worship.
“We have all sorts of people in our church,” he said. “We don’t care what skin color you have, we just want to get the word of God to people.”
“Our goal is to let people know Jesus is good,” Young said. “He can heal and He is the only one we should be listening to.”

Highland Park to celebrate 60 years
It is said that it’s the people who are the church and not the building itself, so when a church celebrates a milestone, it is the people who rejoice over how long the place that brought them together has been there.The congregation of Highland Park Baptist Church will celebrate the church’s 60th anniversary Sunday. Lunch will be served after the morning services and following the meal, they will host a Remembrance Service to honor the memory of members who have passed away during the last 10 years.Members will also get to share their experiences in the church and the Highlanders Quartet will perform. -
Bringing ‘The Noise’ to Main Street’s SCWC
It could get a little noisy on Main Street Duncan tonight. That’s because The Palace Theater will transform into an open venue for people of all denominations to share their love of music and worship through “The Noise.”
