DUNCAN — To cook up a successful fundraiser, it only takes dedicated volunteers, a worthy cause and a pot of beans.

For the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the First Christian Church, the Bean-O-Rama, which is set for Thursday, is that fundraiser. The organization will be serving members of the community, who have purchased tickets, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. in the church’s gathering hall.

The funds collected from the event will go to support local and national missions. Some local missions include Gabriel’s House and the Duncan Toy Shop. CWF also supports the Well, which is the south campus ministry of the First Christian Church, the Texoma Christian Campus and the Disciples Missions in Indianapolis, Ind.

Ann Loftin is the organization president. Loftin said the group members enjoy being able to do something for the community. Most of the members are involved in either one or both of the organizations.

“We love it,” Loftin said.

She said Bonnie Talley, who helped organize Gabriel’s House, is a member of the church, which makes the mission even more special to the women involved in CWF. Loftin said many of the members also help with the Duncan Toy Shop throughout the year, but especially at Christmas when the non-profit is working to get gifts ready for area children. Some of the CWF members are also involved in Church Women United, which oversees the Duncan Toy Shop.

“We’re really involved in both of our organizations,” Loftin said.

While Great Northern beans, butter beans and pinto beans may be the main attraction for the meal, the dinner will also include cornbread, coleslaw and a homemade dessert. To garnish the food, there will be options of sliced onions, pickle relish and jalapeño peppers.

There may be three types of beans being used in the dinner, but the variety doesn’t stop there. There will also be plain and jalapeño cornbread. Plus, there will be many different types of desserts to choose from.

The Bean-O-Rama is the group’s first bean fundraiser. For the past eight years, the organization has served stew.

Although there will be an area to eat at the church, carry out meals will be available. Meals can also be delivered to schools and businesses.

Loftin said the meal is just one way the church and its members are involved in the community.

“I think our church does a lot,” she said.

  • Highland Highland Park to celebrate 60 years

     

    It is said that it’s the people who are the church and not the building itself, so when a church celebrates a milestone, it is the people who rejoice over how long the place that brought them together has been there.
    The congregation of Highland Park Baptist Church will celebrate the church’s 60th anniversary Sunday. Lunch will be served after the morning services and following the meal, they will host a Remembrance Service to honor the memory of members who have passed away during the last 10 years. 
    Members will also get to share their experiences in the church and the Highlanders Quartet will perform.
