Howard Leroy Warren stepped from this life into his brand new home on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at the Ray of Hope Church, with Rev. Dow Pannell, Rev. Mike McCord and David Warren officiating. Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Comanche, with arrangements under the direction of Carter-Smart Funeral Home of Duncan.
Family visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
He was born June 18, 1936 in Goodnight, the third child of Howard Henry Warren and Myrtle Odelia Boston Warren.
Leroy grew up in Perkins, where he spent his childhood hunting and fishing on the Cimarron River. He attended Perkins High School, where he excelled in football and basketball. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve, where he served for six years.
He married Bonita Gardner in 1955, in Stillwater. He later moved to Medford, where he operated a supermarket along with his parents.
On June 12, 1976, he married Joyce Coffey Herrington at Duncan. The made their home in Colby, Kan. for 25 years. Leroy was very active in the community. He owned and operated retail grocery stores in Oakley, Colby and Phillipsburg, Kan.
He was awarded IGA Retailer of the Year and IGA Merchandiser of the Year, as well as other special recognitions. He retired in 1995 and along with his wife moved to the Comanche area in 2001.
Leroy excelled at everything he took on. Leroy couldn’t seem to retire; he was continuously taking on projects of remodeling homes as well as working on his own home. He also pursued his hobbies of hunting and fishing.
Upon moving to Comanche, Leroy and Joyce joined Ray of Hope Church. Leroy became actively involved in the food pantry ministry. Leroy loved working side by side with his many friends at the pantry. He dedicated the last 12 years of his life in the food pantry ministry, helping to make sure families in need were fed.
The family members who preceded him and are welcoming him are his parents Howard Warren and Myrtle Warren, his brother Charles Warren, daughter Kate Warren and two grandsons, Logan Lee Herrington and Talon Dale Grover.
Leroy is survived by his loved ones who are waiting to join him: his wife Joyce, of the home; son David Warren and wife Donalea, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son Doug Warren and wife Pam, of St. Charles, Mo.; daughter Connie and husband Hayden Jones, of Eufaula, Oklahoma, son; Ronnie Herrington and wife Melody of Comanche, Oklahoma, son; Ben Herrington of Duncan; daughter Shona Ballard and husband James, of Norman; grandchildren Lillian Warren, Isaiah Warren, Grady Fox and wife Stephanie, Sasha Fox and Ryan Abresch, Skyler Riddles, Rebekah Herrington, Randi and husband Tony Carter, Nick Herrington and wife Rachel, and Jessie Temaat; and great-grandchildren Gabriel Fox, Myka Abresch, Emberlynn Carter, Eralynn Carter and Eagen Carter, Leroy is also survived by his sister Ann and husband Darrell Agard, of Chandler, Texas, as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends.
Memorial contribution may be made to the Ray of Hope Food Pantry.
