WAURIKA —
Funeral service for Doris Carter will be 11 a.m. today, March 4, at the First Baptist Church in Waurika. Interment will follow in Waurika Cemetery under the direction of Dudley Funeral Home in Waurika with the Rev. Tommy Billings and Rev. Jeff McLemore officiating.
She passed from this life Friday, March 1, 2013, at Lakeridge Place in Wichita Falls, Texas at the age of 96.
Doris Carter was born in Cotton County near Hastings, March 22, 1916, to Arch Lee and Maggie Suddeth Hooper.
She grew up on the farm and attended school at Pecan Grove through eighth grade and then Waurika High School.
Doris married Elbert H. Carter on Feb. 11, 1931, in Wilson. To this union were born eight children, Jimmie and Jay of Norman, Gary of Waurika, Gayle Ritchie of Wichita Falls, Texas, Sharon Duncan of Columbia, Missouri, and DeeAnn Himebaugh of Waurika, and Kenneth and Roger who both preceded her in death.
She is survived by six children; two brothers, Odell of Duncan, and Eldon of Grand Prairie, Texas; 10 grandsons, 10 granddaughters, 22 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
Doris was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest son started school, then she worked as head cook and manager of the Waurika High School cafeteria for 12 years retiring in 1975.
After retirement she worked at Brown Drug Store for a few years and then volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Jefferson County Hospital.
When she was about 90 she decided she was no longer able to plant and care for her vegetable garden and told her family it would be the first time in 71 years that she had not had a garden which made her sad. She still tended her flower beds some, even in the last year. She made cakes and pies for her neighbors.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waurika where she was a Sunday School teacher in her younger years and served on the bereavement committee for many years. She enjoyed reading, playing dominoes and bingo and also watched football and basketball on television. Doris moved to Lakeridge Place in November 2011 and enjoyed everything about living there including the staff, food, her apartment, and the friendly neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 6 sisters and 5 brothers.
Visitation was held Sunday, with family receiving visitors in the evening. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Waurika Family Life Center Project.
Condolence messages may be sent to the family at www.dudleyfuneralhomes.com
