DUNCAN —
A. G. “Salty” Garrett, 87, of Duncan passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Duncan Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at New Hope Baptist Church West with the Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Duncan Cemetery under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
“Salty” was born Aug. 9, 1925, at Shamrock, to William Homer Garrett and Eva Manor Garrett. He was a graduate of St. Louis High School. He married Wilma Lee Flessa on April 24, 1944, in Shawnee.
He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving his country proudly with the 81st Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized in Italy and Germany from 1943 to 1946. Once the war had ended he played on the Army football team which traveled all over Europe.
He began his career with Skelly Oil Co. and worked at gasoline plants in Skellytown and Pampa, Texas, eventually becoming plant superintendent at Minneola, Kan., and Borger, Texas. He accepted the superintendent position at the Velma Getty plant in 1974, and retired from there in 1981.
He served on the Board of Director for Frank Phillips Junior College from 1971 to 1972. He also officiated football and basketball games and umpired baseball games for numerous years.
“Salty” was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church West, the American Legion and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was an avid golfer and played weekly up to recent months. He amazed his friends and family by “shooting his age,” or under, on a regular basis.
“Salty” is survived by his wife, Wilma Lee of the home; four children: Al Garrett and wife Jan of Springtown, Texas, Jana Haynie and husband Robert of Lubbock, Texas, Pat Garrett Rawlings of Oklahoma City, and Susan Nichols and husband David of Duncan; seven grandchildren: Lisa, Chad, Rob, Misti, Trace, Meghan and Ashlee Gene; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Garrett.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Chad Garrett, Rob Haynie, Trace Nichols; great-grandsons: Chase Ray, Zach Haynie and Bryan Beaver.
Honorary pallbearers are his golf buddies; George Clopton and Bobby Branscum; and special neighbor, Tommy Myer.
