DUNCAN —
James Homer Powers, a longtime Comanche resident, peacefully passed away Friday evening, Jan. 4, 2013, at Duncan Regional Hospital. He was 85 years old. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Countryside Baptist Church, with Bro. Dee Bowen officiating, and Bro. Dow Pannell assisting.
Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Monday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday; and 9 a.m. - noon,Wednesday. The family will be receiving friends 6-7 p.m. Tuesday.
Homer was born Dec. 4, 1927 in Comanche, to Homer Sr. and Minnie Lee (Morgan) Powers.
He and Nancy Hynson were united in marriage on Aug. 12, 1949 in Del City. Homer worked for many years for Sun Oil Company. He loved jug line fishing, gardening, cooking, reading western books, and also watching old western movies. He loved working with and raising cattle. He considered many of his cows to be his pets. He was a member of Countryside Baptist Church. He was a loving father, and a wonderful husband.
Survivors include his wife Nancy, of the home; two sons: Jim Powers and wife Judy, Duncan; and Steve Powers and wife Linda, Comanche; two daughters: Sammie Rice and husband Gary, Dallas, Texas; and Rayma Powers, Duncan; one brother, Harris Powers and wife Patsy, Comanche; 15 grandchildren: Heather Miller and husband Chad, Shellee Graham and husband James, Gregg Fitzgerald and wife Kim, Gina Solomon and husband Greg, Stephanie Erlenbusch and husband Adam, David Rice and wife Sondra, Michael Rice and wife Tracey, Aaron Rice and wife Zandie, Joshua Cowan and wife Jennifer, Angela Gibbons and husband Mikey, Natalie Hillhouse and husband John, Brandi Shell and husband Jason, Kristie Greenway and husband Todd, Jamey Powers and wife Crystal, and Morgan Powers; 32 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Andrew “Bud” Powers.
Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Powers, Jim Powers, Jamey Powers, Joshua Cowan, Morgan Powers and Mike Powers.
