Dr. Charles Alfred Hawley

DUNCAN — Nov. 20, 1926 — Oct. 15, 2012

Dr. Charles Alfred Hawley, 85, of Duncan, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at home in Duncan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel, with the Elder Lee White officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. in Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, with full military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Charles was born Nov. 20, 1926 in Winooski, Vt., the son of George and Priscilla Pasent Hawley. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a Prisoner of War, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorius Service in the Republic of Vietnam on April 3, 1967. He was involved in Navy and Army Intelligence.

He later attended Oklahoma Missionary Baptist College for his Doctorate Degree in Theology. He was an ordained Baptist Minister. He also attended Oklahoma City University continuing his education in Bible Studies. He received the OMBC Golden Cross Award in the Fall semester of 1982. He was a former member of Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Boyd as pastor. Later he became a member of Greater Love Victory Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Ardmore with Elder Lee White as pastor.

He married Patricia Lewis Mitchell in Wichita Falls, Texas on Oct. 6, 2005.

She writes, ‘My husband was a very kind and loving person. He was always protecting and caring for me. He told me every night that he loved me, and I did the same. He was a man of God, and I really loved the spirit he possessed. I will cherish the poems he wrote for me. I can picture him standing in Church playing the song “How Great Thou Art” on his harmonica. He could preach and teach the Word of God with such anointing from the Lord. My husband was a blessing to me in these past seven years, which is God’s number. I praise God that he obeyed God, and chose me as his wife. He will forever always be in my heart.’

Charles is survived by his wife Patricia, of the home; one son, Joshua Hawley of Oklahoma City; two step-sons, Patrick Lewis and wife, Traci of Midwest City, and Keith Lewis of Helena; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, and a special granddaughter, Tenisha Lewis of Oklahoma City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Priscilla Hawley.
