Doris Janette Hooks Dorsey

Jan. 18, 1938 — Feb. 8, 2013

DUNCAN — In Tatums on Jan. 18, 1938, Jessie Winslett and Mary L. (Bryant) Winslett were presented with a precious rose, Doris Janette. She was known by family and friends as “Mossie.” Doris was the youngest of two siblings born to this union. She graduated from Tatums Grade/High School in 1956 and moved to Oklahoma City. It was at Sunnylane Baptist Church where she accepted Christ and was baptized under the pastorship of the late Rev. Rhome.

She departed from her temporary home to her permanent home on Friday, Feb. 8. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at Immanuel Baptist Church. Visitation is from 1-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Howard-Harris Funeral Chapel in Lawton.

Doris united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Larry Darnell Hooks on June 8, 1958. Unto this union five beautiful petals blossomed, three sons and two daughters. Doris later joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the pastorship of the late Rev. Houston. She worked faithfully in the youth department and was the broadcast journalist. It was at Mt. Carmel that Doris was blessed with a gift from God. Doris began playing gospel notes. She played her first song for the congregation “I’m So Grateful,” sung by her two daughters. This was the beginning of her ministry.

Doris and her family later moved to Duncan, where they united with the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. She served as minister of music faithfully for seventeen years playing for the youth choir, brotherhood, mission and mass choir under the pastorship of the late Rev. F.W. Whitaker. Her current pastor is Rev. Ronald Boyd. Doris played for over 40 years for numerous churches throughout southwest Oklahoma.

Doris was an entrepreneur. She opened and operated Los Ninos Daycare Center for a number of years and employed many people from the community. She loved her family and sharing with others about God. And if you were in her presence, there was never a quiet or dull moment. She would insist that you sing even if you couldn’t the old 100s. She enjoyed and touched many children’s lives. Everybody loved Aunt Doris.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, one son Terry Lynn Hooks, two brothers Dennis and Wille Winslett, and her second husband, the late Charles Dorsey, Jr.

Cherishing her memories are the loving survivors, her former husband Larry D. Hooks; two daughters, Phyllis R. Jackson of Duncan and Latonya Hooks Simon and decon-in-training Woodrow Simon of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Lawton; two sons, Rev. Reginald P. Hooks, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hugo, and Rev. Larry D. Hooks II (Marcena) of Oklahoma City; once sister Onetha Miles and her husband Rev. Raymond K. Miles, pastor of Bethany Baptist Church in Duncan; an aunt Juanita Munn of Lawton; one step-son Johnny Austin of Oklahoma City; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; special nephew and niece, Timothy R. Miles of Duncan and Carol Floyd (Jim) of Oklahoma City; special cousins Norma J. Lennox and Jim Brown of Duncan, Kaye Francis James of Dallas, Texas and Kathy D. Williams of Jacksonville, Fla. and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Her motherly love and grandmotherly love was spread beyond her immediately family. She just loved people. She demonstrated to all how we should handle life’s challenges.
