Irene Estelle Merritt

Dec. 24, 1928 — Nov. 21, 2012

OKLAHOMA CITY — Longtime Duncan resident, Irene Estelle Merritt, completed this part of her life’s journey on Nov. 21, 2012, in Oklahoma City.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Bethel Assembly of God in Duncan, with the Rev. Ron Meador officiating, assisted by Patricia Bowman. Music will be arranged by Shapauni Budler. Burial will be in Duncan Cemetery, under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home of Marlow.

The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home in Marlow 3-5 p.m. Sunday.

Born Monday, Dec. 24, 1928, in Hulen, to Emil and Fronie (Wilkerson) Kaspereit, Irene lived briefly in Lawton before moving to Duncan, where she attended Empire school. She married her husband of 58 years, Elvard Merritt on June 26, 1944 in Rush Springs. Ell preceded her in death Sept. 11, 2002. Irene raised her family, was active in her church, made lifetime friendships, and was a lifelong witness to the strength of a cheerful smile, a kind word, and a listening ear. Her witness to her faith extended far beyond the walls of Bethel Assembly of God.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her daughter, Emily and husband Richard Allen, her son-in-law, Jack Ingram, her brother, James and wife Anna, her brother, Herman, all of Duncan, also two sisters, Dorothy Moody of Tacoma, Washington and Vina Joann Kaspereit of Harrison, Arkansas, brother-in-law Otis Merritt and his wife Barbara of Agawam, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Ready to welcome her home are her husband, Ell, and two daughters, Judy Yvonne Merritt and Barbra Ell Ingram.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America or the American Kidney Foundation.
