William G. 'Bill' Cox

Aug. 11, 1921 — Jan. 16, 2013

DUNCAN — William G. (Bill) Cox, 91, a former Bartlesville resident who in recent years had made his home at Duncan, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at the Sterling House in Duncan.

Mr. Cox was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Tulsa to Mary Inez (Rankin) Cox and William M. Cox. He attended school in Tulsa, graduating from Tulsa Central High in 1939 and Tulsa University with a degree in Physics Engineering in 1949, after military service with the U.S. Marines during the second world war.

He began a 44-year career with PSO in 1940. He volunteered with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and was involved in the invasion of Kiska and Attu in the Aleutian Islands. He was with the 2nd Marine division in New Zealand and at the landings of Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian in the South Pacific.

He was awarded the Military order of the Purple Heart for wounds received against the enemy and various other citations for his service.

At the end of the war in 1945, he returned to Tulsa and his employment with PSO. On Nov. 27 that same year, he married Bette Jo Woolsey.

He worked at various supervisory and management positions in Tulsa, Lawton, McAlester and Bartlesville, where he retired in Feb. 1985 as the Northern Division Manager for PSO.

He was a long time Elder at Tulsa’s Eastside Christian Church and was a member of the Disciples Christian Church in Bartlesville.

He really enjoyed music, especially barbershop style singing, where he was actively involved for a number of years.

He was a licensed professional engineer, a member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, 55+ Activity Center, and a long-time Vita volunteer.

He is survived by one son, David F. Cox and Linda Cox (daughter-in-law) of Duncan; a granddaughter, Dalinda Marie (Cox) Rackley and husband Ryan of Oklahoma City; and a niece and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette Jo Cox on Sept. 13, 2004, and by a brother, Harold D. Cox.

Funeral services for Mr. Cox were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, with Rev. Roger Sheppard officiating and directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory of Bartlesville.
