James Haskell ‘Hack’ Clement

Feb. 22, 1920 — Oct. 16, 2012

DUNCAN —

James Haskell “Hack” Clement, 92, former Marlow resident, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Stonebrook Assisted Living in Denison, Texas, following a short illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, in the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Broughton and Bro. Joe Price officiating. Burial will be in the Marlow Cemetery under direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home in Marlow.

Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born Feb. 22, 1920, in Danville, Ark., to Alice and James W. “Willie” Clement, Hack lived most of his life in the Marlow and Central High area.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother. He has one surviving sister, Betty Jo Smith of Clovis, Calif.

Hack attended Marlow High School, where he was an All-State Football player. He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Hill of Marlow, on Jan. 1, 1942.

He enlisted at Fort Sill in March of 1942, and was sent overseas, where he received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during World War II. Upon returning from the service in 1944, Hack worked for a time as a roughneck and ran the Whiterock Café before joining the Postal Service in 1955, where he was a city, then rural letter carrier for many years, retiring in 1983.

Hack and Virginia had three daughters: Jimmie Kay, Sandy and Sally. Hack was preceded in death by Virginia in August of 1977, and by his oldest daughter Jimmie Clement Mathis in May of 2008.

In November 1978, Hack married long-time Marlow resident and school teacher, Marian Eaves Gregston, which added another daughter to the family, Susan Gregston.

In addition to being a member of the Masonic Lodge and VFW, Hack was active in the church, where he served as treasurer and Deacon at Denton Baptist Church for many years, and later, as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Marlow. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, tinkering with cars, gardening and building birdhouses. An avid football fan, he seldom missed a Marlow Outlaw football game.

He and Marian enjoyed traveling throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri, with an occasional trip to California to visit family. He especially enjoyed spending time with grandkids and great-grandkids.

Hack will best be remembered by family and friends, not only for his loving and caring ways, but also for his raisin and pumpkin pies and holiday peanut brittle.

Survivors include wife Marian, Stonebrook Assisted Living, Denison; children Sandy and Mike Emmons, Sally and Steve Sparks, Susan and Billy Ewing, all living in Texas, and Lon Mathis of Marlow; grandkids: Sheena Mays and Brian Andrews; and great-grandkids: Tonya, Alin and Patrick Jr. Mays, and James Andrews.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Hack’s name to the American Cancer Society or Home Hospice (www.homehospice.org).
