DHS boys have rare loss in Harrah meet

DUNCAN — After a successful meet against Altus and Mustang last week, the Duncan High swimming team was back in action Monday afternoon in Harrah, competing against Tuttle and Oklahoma Christian.

The meet got off to a somewhat shocking start for the Demons medley relay team. In a rare occurrence this season, the team of junior Mason Lang, sophomore Damon Demar, senior Grant Walker and sophomore Brennan DeHart didn’t finish in first place.

Harrah managed to squeak by with the victory, in a time of 1:54.51 minutes, although the Demons were a very close second clocking in at 1:56.47.

Lady Demons senior Kaitlyn Loafman got her day off to a strong start with a second-place finish in the girls 200 yard individual freestyle, where she posted a time of 2:31.38.

Another pair of seniors who had strong showings in individual events were Andy Stewart, who clocked in at 2:07.23 which earned him second place along with Zach Nichols who came in fifth with a time of 2:58.82.

Sophomore Jill Baker continued her strong comeback to the sport, with a third in the girls 50 yard freestyle. Freshman Hannah Looney earned seventh place, with fellow freshman Leah Kafer getting 14th place. Juniors Bethany Bolton and RoseMarie Wagonseller came in at 15th and 16th places respectively.

DHS got a victory on the board, when Stewart took the boys 50 yard freestyle, in a time of 24.81. Demar finished sixth and junior Peyton Gondolf was 16th.

In the boys 100 yard butterfly, Walker claimed fourth, with a time of 1:05.40. Loafman finished third in her second individual event, the 100 yard freestyle, while Looney claimed sixth.

When the boys 100 yard freestyle event arrived, DeHart brought DHS a second-place finish, with a time of 57.24. Gondolf finished in 16th.

For only the second time this season, the Duncan girls relay team showcased its talents. This time around, the Lady Demons team comprised of Loafman, Baker, Bolton and Kafer finished in fourth, with a time of 2:23.42.

In the boys 200 yard freestyle relay, the Demons claimed third place with a time of 1:41.88.

Kafer also registered a fourth-place finish in the girls 100 yard breaststroke. Also placing in the event were Wagonseller and Bolton, in eighth and ninth places, respectively.

Demar claimed sixth in the boys 100 yard breaststroke, with Nichols coming in 10th. Meanwhile, the DHS boys relay team claimed victory in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:46.44.

As a team the Demons finished in second place with 64 points behind Harrah, while the Lady Demons finished third with 28 points.

DHS swimming will take an extended break for the holidays and return to the water Tuesday Jan 10 at Kingfisher.
