DUNCAN —
Chemistry, and science in general, is all about asking questions. Thursday, questions were being asked, but Kevin Roddy and seven other students were providing the answers.
Roddy was joined by Alex Bowers, Abbie Stewart, Hayden Stephenson, Kelly Thomas-Cutshaw, Sam Allen, Hayden Poff and Cody Crew in the “You Be the Chemist” contest.
The program is designed to stoke an interest for chemistry in a new, young generation. Larry Eoff has been a chemist at Halliburton for 19 years.
“We (Halliburton) have been doing it for the past four years,” Eoff said.
“All of the chemist involved really appreciate Halliburton letting us get off for a few hours to do this for the community.”
Roddy is the son of Craig and Gretchen Roddy. He is in the eighth grade at Duncan Middle School. He place second at state last year. Roddy said the competition was “intense.”
“I really like chemistry,” he said. “I have fun doing it and learning.”
Participants were given 20 questions in the first round, with the top five students continue to the second round. The students were administered 15 more questions and the top three scores were selected for the final round.
The final round consisted of 10 questions, all administered by Eoff. The results were tallied and Roddy was announced victorious. Eoff said Roddy answered every questions in the final round correct.
“The teachers that do this do an amazing job,” Eoff said. “We don’t have any problems getting students to get involved with this.”
