Empire Elementary had its annual Elementary Science Fair on Feb. 10, and 62 projects were entered by fifth- and sixth-grade students.
Annetta Garlinger, Empire science teacher and fair coordinator, said, “The students did a really good job.”
The winners were as follows:
Grand prize overall — Jordan Setters for Blade Wars 2 in sixth-grade physical science.
Reserve prize overall — Brandi Eaves for The Germ Attack in fifth-grade physical science.
Fifth-grade Earth science — Brevin Deweese, first place, with Unpolluting Polluted Water.
Fifth-grade life science — First place: Cale Schreiner for Is it Age Before Accuracy?; second place: Austin Stuck for Tiger Stripes; third place: Heather Pitcock for Plasma Soup; honorable mention: Levi Barnes for Electrified Earthworms.
Fifth-grade physical science — First place: Brandi Eaves for The Germ Attack; second place: Micah Weber for Magnificent Breakfast Cereal; third place: Ryley Dumas for Hot Ice; honorable mention: Raven Sanford for Germs.
Sixth-grade Earth science — First place: Kadie Ellis for Crystal Light; second place: Tyler Bauch for How to Regenerate a Battery; third place: Evan Whitt for Hot vs. Cold; honorable mention: Mace Robinson for Toxic Soil.
Sixth-grade life science — First place: Elizabeth Edwards for Kids Don't Rule; second place: Lane Williams for Chemical vs. Natural Fertilizer; third place: Ethan George for The Rack Is Back and Chris Bronson for Does Plants Grow Better in Water or Soil?; honorable mention: Dakota Pannell for Huddling For Heat.
Sixth-grade physical science —First place: Jordan Setters for Blade Wars 2; second place: McKenna Collins for CSI: Empire; third place: Dylan Earnhart for Potato Battery; honorable mention: Halley Ponder for Digital Imprints.
The first, second, and third place winners received a trophy, medal and large ribbon. Everyone received a participation ribbon.
The judges for the Empire science fair were Michael Duhon, James Benkley, James Warburton, Cody White, Gary Cheramie and Tom Dealy.
