County Commissioners approve Crosstown bridge beam transfers

DUNCAN — A former bridge in Oklahoma City is giving new life to bridge projects in Stephens County.

During Tuesday regular meeting, the Board of Stephens County Commissioners approved two transfers of steel beams from the I-40 Crosstown Bridge. The bridge is being disassembled, and the beams are being offered to counties throughout Oklahoma.

The beams being transferred to Stephens County will be used for bridges in District 2. Any time the beams are transferred, whether from the Crosstown Bridge to the county or from the county to the new bridge site, the commissioners have to approve the transfer.

Todd Churchman, District 2 commissioner and board chairman, said the bridge beams have been inspected and are ready for transfer.

The Crosstown beam program is a project established by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. The goal is to make construction of new bridges less expensive for Oklahoma counties.

In other action:

- The board acknowledged a notice of tort claim submitted by attorney Alexander L. Bednar. This tort claim, which required no vote by the commissioners, was on behalf of Elizabeth Murphy, Murphy Farms LLC.

- As with every month, the commissioners approved the county officer monthly reports and allocation of Alcohol Beverage Tax.

- Another monthly agenda item approved was the cash fund estimate of needs and the request for appropriations.

- The board received and approved nine county utility permits.

The board approved the payment of any purchase orders and the issuance of any blanket purchase orders. As with the utility permits, this is an item the commissioners discuss and approve weekly.

- The commissioners also approved the minutes of the previous meeting. That meeting was Oct. 1.
