DUNCAN —
About mid-morning each workday, Laurie Baldwin stops her busy schedule to enjoy a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries. Baldwin is the event coordinator for Duncan Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the Community Breakfast that returns Thursday at the Simmons Center.
Starting the day off with breakfast is something that has long been recommended by nutritionists, doctors and of course, your mother.
It’s also a good way to kick start each month, says Debra Burch, Duncan Chamber of Commerce president.
While the “Community Breakfast” program did take a three month break for the summer, Burch said many people are looking forward to getting together again for the monthly breakfasts.
“People tell us they miss them in the summer,” she said.
To kick off the return of the breakfast, there will be some new information in the healthy minutes from Duncan Regional Hospital, and, Burch said, IBC Bank will be the sponsor. Each month through December has been set on the calendar with a sponsor.
“There’s a lot of new things happening in the banking industry. People want to know what is going on in the community. Hal Labyer will be the speaker.”
A buffet-style breakfast gets things rolling at 6:45 a.m. and the program starts promptly at 7 a.m. Each speaker is limited to about three minutes, except for the main sponsor. A lot of community events and city news is shared during the hour, and September proves busy.
“We’ve got some events that are coming up, Western Spirit Celebration, the book festival, Vintage Day, the arts council theater programming, and we will be highlighting chamber programs, and city updates,” Burch said. This is the third year for the Community Breakfast program, and attendance has been averaging from 80 to 100 people.
“Most people are affiliated with the Chamber, but we’ve seen new people come and the guests,” she said.
Those that attend the event enjoy the social atmosphere and hearing what is happening in the community, even after they’ve read it in the paper, she said.
Burch said there also will be a speaker to talk about some of the new things at the high school. There is a cost to attend the breakfast and reservations are required.
For information or to reserve your seat, call the Chamber at 580-255-3644.
