DUNCAN —
A resolution calling for a sales tax election could help produce extra funding for rural fire departments throughout Stephens County. But before the resolution can be filed, the Board of Stephens County Commissioners has to find out who would be covering the cost of the election.
During Monday’s regular meeting, the commissioners are going to work with the fire department representatives to find out how the cost of the election is going to be covered. The commissioners have been working with the fire departments since the July 9 regular meeting to the a 0.15 percent sales tax instituted throughout the county.
If the election is officially called, the resolution would be up for approval of county residents during the Nov. 6 general election. Money produced by the sales tax would go toward making large purchases for the departments and maintenance costs.
The fire department representatives mentioned several uses for the funds, including purchasing bunker gear, buying vehicles, offsetting fuel costs and maintaining fire stations.
Although there are 12 rural fire departments in the county, the funds would be divided into 13 accounts. The last account would provide extra funding to four senior citizen food programs in Marlow, Duncan and Velma.
In addition to helping purchase better equipment for the departments, it would help the fire departments continue the same high level of service to their residents by offsetting rising costs.
The board will also discuss an agreement between the commissioners and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and a resolution to enter the agreement. The agreement is for a bridge and approaches project at Little Beaver Creek.
The project would replace a low a water crossing.
The commissioners are set to meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Commissioners Office in the Stephens County Courthouse.
