COMANCHE —
For a fourth year running, the Comanche Fire Department Predator Hunt Fundraiser was lifted to a new level of funds.
Captain Bobby Bowen said it’s the best year, yet, for the annual fundraiser, with a little more than $3,000 being generated for the general fund the fire department uses for operation money.
“We had more people, better prizes and more money raised,” Bowen said. “We had a good time, and (the event) helps us start off real good.”
Bowen said the fundraiser was advertised promoted more this year, which he believed led to the growing turnout, which involved 45 two-man teams registering for competition in Big Coyote and Cat categories.
About 31 two-man teams competed last year, when the hunt raised $1,800.
Taking first place and winning a pair of Weatherly Vanguard Rifles were Jayde Clark and Kelly Jackson, who scored 24 points via the scoring system. They had a 10 point lead over the runners-up.
The competitors meet Friday evening at the fire department to register, eat chili and learn the rules for the event.
“We basically went over the general rules, the time for hunting and anything else relevant,” Bowen said. “We explained how to tag the animals for (the judges).”
The hunters had to abide by Oklahoma State Game and Fishing regulations.
The total cash paid out for prizes and side contests was $7,400 with the donated prizes.
