DUNCAN — Have a front porch that needs repairing? A hand railing that needs installing? Maybe your roof is leaking. Whatever the problem, there’s a mission team that is heading to Duncan this summer to help fix the problems.
World Changers will help improve the lives of many area residents but they need to know who needs help. There will be 21 applicants accepted for the free program and 21 teams of about 11 volunteers each will be assigned to the project sites.
“We need people to apply for the free program,” said Shelley Morcom, association coordinator for local project. The requests need to be submitted by the first week of March, she said.
“This will be the first time World Changers has come to Duncan. World Changers has been to Tulsa and will go to Tulsa the week after Duncan,” Morcom said. The projects will take place June 7 -12.
The local mission project is being sponsored by Mullins Baptist Association.
Morcom said that in 2009, many church members traveled to Jasper, Wyo., and to Soberly, Mo. in 2008.
While the World Changers mission team is mostly from around the country, there will be some local faces amongst the workers.
“Not only do all of these youth come and volunteer their time and labor, they pay $259 each to do this,” Morcom said. That covers meals, insurance and other expenses for the week.
Morcom said that youth from Denton Baptist Church and Fair Baptist Church (Empire) will join the FBC Duncan youth and other World Changer participants for this summer’s mission.
She said that churches from Wyoming, Texas, Arizona, Georgia and Missouri will send members to Duncan. They will stay at First Baptist Church in Duncan, which is serving as host for the volunteers.
Each group will bring its sponsors for the week-long stay. Local project leaders include Morcom, and Sonny Taylor, who are both coordinators; Glen Laden, construction coordinator; and Steve Morcom, agency representative.
