DLT to perform ‘Dixie’ as fundraiser

DUNCAN — Duncan Little Theatre may not be swimming to Louisiana. But the “Dixie Swim Club” cast and crew is working to raise money to get there just the same.

DLT will have a special performance of “The Dixie Swim Club” at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Simmons Center.

This play led to the group’s state victory during the OCTAfest (Oklahoma Community Theatre Association). Duncan was one of two theater groups chosen to represent the state in the regional level.

The one time performance on Sept. 8 will be to help raise funds to get the team to the regional competition in April 2013.

Additionally, the group will be selling miles to help raise even more money for the regional festival.

“We are very excited that Duncan and the area will get to see it,” Sharon Burum, “Dixie” director, said. “This is the first time DLT has been selected to represent Oklahoma.”

At the regional level, the Oklahoma groups will face off against state winners from Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico and Louisiana. The cast of “Dixie” include Heather Amaya, Tana Ashford, Gina Flesher, Loisdawn Jones and Cindy Reynolds.

Ashford and Jones received acting awards during the state competition.

“It’s a dream cast,” Burum said.

The performance in Duncan will abide by the international community theater rules. The group will perform within a 100 square foot box, and they will be timed to ensure they stay within the allotted time.

“We practice it that way,” Burum said. “We’re still going by those rules.”

Although the group found success with “Dixie,” there will be a few changes to the production. At OCTAfest, the group received critiques. The team will be using those critiques to improve the overall project.

If DLT wins at the regional level, the next stop would be the national competition in June 2013, in Indiana.

“It’s very exciting,” Burum said.

DLT group representatives will attend Thursday’s Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry community breakfast to continue promoting the fundraising performance and the mileage fundraiser.

Burum said the DLT team may be representing Oklahoma, but it is also representing Duncan and Stephens County. She said the group’s success is one everyone in Stephens County should take pride in.

“I hope everyone will come out and celebrate with us,” Burum said.
