Council moves meeting up a day; will hear from DAEDF’s Roggow

DUNCAN — Duncan City Council will meet Monday instead of Tuesday. The meeting will still be at 5:15 p.m. in the council chambers, but was moved up a day to accomodate a special event being held Tuesday. The change allows the council members to attend  the Southwest Oklahoma Legislative Reception.

Because of the city council’s meeting change, is is classified as a special meeting.

At the Monday meeting, the Duncan Area Economic Development Foundation will be proposing a land purchase at the meeting of the Duncan Economic Development Trust Authority meeting following Monday’s council meeting.

If approved, DAEDF would be approved to acquire 48 acres for $245,000 for the purpose of developing a Duncan Center for its Business Incubator program. The proposed property is located next door to Red River Technology Center and Cameron University.

Duncan Area Economic Development Foundation Chairman Lyle Roggow said this property will provide great synergy between DAEDF, Cameron University and Red River Technology Center.

“All of our missions are very similar,” Roggow said.

“That is the beauty of this property.”

The location of this property would allow for the development of students at the business incubator with internship and projects to provide them hands-on experience that could then be employed in major area businesses.

The purpose of the land purchase is to create a technology and business park. If approved, DAEDF would eventually move to that campus. DAEDF is currently housed in the building that is primarily used by Wilco.

Roggow said this would be a great investment and addition for the growth and future of Duncan not just for the next 10 years but also the next 50 years.

In the council meeting, the council will consider:

* Authorizing the purchase of one 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 Pickup from Bob Howard Auto Group for $30,897.00

* Approving parts, repairs and maintenance made to Duncan Fire Department Apparatus for $17,413.30 by  Chief Fire and Safety in accordance with NFPA Regulations.

* Approving parts, repairs and maintenance made to Duncan Fire Department Apparatus for $7,700.28 by Firewerks Fire Apparatus Repair, Inc. in accordance with NFPA regulations.

* Variance/Appeal Request of Marathon Oil Company to Section 5-115(F) of the Oil, Gas and other Minerals Ordinance to Thief Hatch Locking Provisions for the BL Swinehart 1-22H Well Permit.

  • Jefferson County gets rain and tornado warning

    Two fronts passed through Jefferson County between 3 and 5 p.m. Monday, the second producing a rain-wrapped tornado spotted by storm watchers north of Ryan and moving east. The same front passed over Ringling, with circulation but no funnel formation reported.
    Most damage in Jefferson County was limited to rural areas, where straight line wind damage was noted. Pea- to marble-sized hail fell twice in Waurika and the surrounding area, with minimal damage.

     Deborah Hudson slowed from the frantic pace just long enough to admit it was probably the busiest day ever at McDonald’s Restaurant in the Duncan Walmart on U.S. 81 here.
    “It started around 3:30 p.m.” she said, watching a line 20 people deep patiently wait for a chance to order, “and it hasn’t let up since. We had to bring extra workers in from the other store and we’ve stayed just like this.”

    A tornado touched down in Stephens County Monday about 3 p.m., east of Duncan, and Central High Mayor Julie McKinney snapped a photo of it with her cellphone. Watching it cross State Highway 29, three miles east of Marlow, with her, was Sheriff Wayne McKinney, Marlow Fire Chief Ryan Hall and county Emergency Management Director Gary Ball.
