Crowd shows for Holiday Stroll

The sky was overcast, and it appeared ready to rain at any moment. But Main Street Duncan was packed with parked cars, and sidewalks filled with people.

Main Street Duncan’s Holiday Stroll got off to a busy start Saturday. The event promotes local businesses, while inviting people to do holiday shopping in Downtown Duncan.

Tammy Johnson, Main Street Duncan director, said turnout was much improved from last year. Johnson said this increase in attendance may have been a result of the new approach taken by the organization and the businesses.

“I tried to pump the businesses up,” Johnson said. “I took a more active roll in the Stroll.”

On Saturday, the Main Street Duncan office had 500 discount cards to pass out. By noon, the cards were gone. Johnson said she may print off more for day two of the event.

Many of the stores had their own sales going on, and some even had people standing outside businesses, while passing out samples.

Main Street Duncan had the most important person outside the businesses, though. Santa Clause made his way around Main Street Duncan. He passed out peppermint candy, while greeting those who stopped by to shop.

Johnson said she was excited by the number of people who made their way around the stores. She said the event was beneficial to the businesses on Main Street and could provide a boost to the economy.

What she was most excited about was that the event might have brought people out, and those people were getting a head start on their holiday shopping.

“I have seen people coming out with sacks,” Johnson said. “They’re shopping. They’re not just here for the discount cards.”

Lawana Hendrix was one of many people who, took family around to explore what many of the Main Street stores had to offer. Hendrix said she was getting into the holiday spirit, and the Holiday Stroll was doing its part to promote the upcoming Christmas season.

“I’m looking at Christmas decorations,” Hendrix said.

The Stroll also offered her an opportunity to spent time with her family, she said, and a chance to get out of the house.

“I’m able to get out with the grandkids,” Hendrix said. “I get to see new placed that I have opened. There some places I hadn’t been in, yet.”

The Holiday Stroll continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today on Main Street in Duncan.
