rue21 opens Duncan store on Valentine’s Day

DUNCAN —  

A portion of Duncan’s former Goody’s storefront is finally seeing customers again as rue21 opened its doors Thursday.
The space has been empty since 2009 but will now be host to a center of young adult fashion that rue21 Store Manager Renee Moore said there is a great need for in Duncan.
“There is not a whole lot of variety in retail places for (young) people to shop at here,” she said. 
Moore’s recent experience with rue21 includes her time as the rue21 Store Manager in Lawton. She said one thing that sets the Duncan rue21 apart from many other store locations is the size and variety offered.
“It is a larger store compared to most,” Moore said. “We actually have a good variety of menswear. A lot of them have very small departments for the menswear.”
Before opening, the store held an employment fair on Jan. 27. The store is currently fully staffed and will continue normal operating hours.
The store will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
“Usually, we base it off of whatever shopping center we are in,” Moore said. “We want to be the same as everybody else.
Moore said most of the customers and interactions that she has had in Duncan have shown excitement at the new retail center.
“I think it is a great opportunity,” she said. “People do not have to go out of town to find the latest fashion trend. They can find it in their little local town. It will help keep our money here and help our taxes. I think, overall, it will be a great thing for Duncan.”
While the store officially opened Thursday, there was a soft opening on Wednesday for employees only. A ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday with a couple employees and a few customers who had lined up to shop at the store kicked off the store’s time in Duncan. At this time, the store has not joined the Duncan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The remaining portion of the Goody’s storefront, managed by Horne Properties, is still available for lease to retail outlets.

  • Senator Inhofe key speaker at GOP Fish Fry

    Republicans from throughout Oklahoma will gather Saturday at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center in Duncan, for the 9th annual GOP Fish Fry. This year, they will get a chance to hear U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, as he is the keynote speaker and is expected to arrive just before 5 p.m. for the event.
    Inhofe, R-Tulsa, is a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and has been instrumental in the passing of the Water Resources Development Act of 2013, or S. 601. The measure passed 83-14 in the Senate on Wednesday and authorizes new projects for water infrastructure for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
