Sanders joins RRTC board as newest member

DUNCAN —  

A new member was added to the Red River Technology Center’s Board of Education during the regular meeting Monday night in order replace Lance Strickland, who had to step down since he was moving out of Zone 4.
Ricky Sanders, a native of the Duncan area, was named as the newest board member. Living in the northeast side of Duncan puts him in the district 4 border and having a good background with RRTC makes Sanders an ideal addition to the board.
“It’s a special place for my family,” he said. “My mom (Marsha Morris) worked here since the mid-70s and retired last year and my stepdad (Jerry D. Morris) was superintendent here for many years.”
The Technology Center was also the place of Sanders’ first job, where he did maintenance while in high school and college. Additionally, Strickland is Sanders’ brother-in-law. Sanders was told about the position on the board after a conversation between his mother Marsha, Strickland and Ken Layn, RRTC’s previous superintendent who retired in December 2012.
“I’m not sure who had the idea but I’m pretty sure they all discussed it,” Sanders said as he laughed. 
“I am honored to serve here. There’s plenty to learn and it looks like there’s good people to be working with.”
Sanders is an accountant for Halliburton and his wife Eme is a pre-K teacher in Duncan. They have two children, daughter Presley, 5, and son Parker, 1.
Other agenda items included:
n The board convened into executive session to discuss the renewal or non-renewal of Brook Holding, principal, and Lisa Williams, A&CD coordinator. Both were approved to contract renewal.
n The summer work schedule for June 3, 2013 through July 31, 2013 was disapproved by the board on recommendation of Superintendent Dennis Loafman and Board President Rodney Love. Loafman planned to do some work on the schedule and bring it back in the March board meeting.
n On Feb. 28, the annual Career Expo hosted by RRTC will take place at the Simmons Center.

  • Jefferson County gets rain and tornado warning

    Two fronts passed through Jefferson County between 3 and 5 p.m. Monday, the second producing a rain-wrapped tornado spotted by storm watchers north of Ryan and moving east. The same front passed over Ringling, with circulation but no funnel formation reported.
    Most damage in Jefferson County was limited to rural areas, where straight line wind damage was noted. Pea- to marble-sized hail fell twice in Waurika and the surrounding area, with minimal damage.

  • Power outages keep burger flippers busy

     Deborah Hudson slowed from the frantic pace just long enough to admit it was probably the busiest day ever at McDonald’s Restaurant in the Duncan Walmart on U.S. 81 here.
    “It started around 3:30 p.m.” she said, watching a line 20 people deep patiently wait for a chance to order, “and it hasn’t let up since. We had to bring extra workers in from the other store and we’ve stayed just like this.”

  • Duncan dodges destruction after small tornado knocks out power

    A tornado touched down in Stephens County Monday about 3 p.m., east of Duncan, and Central High Mayor Julie McKinney snapped a photo of it with her cellphone. Watching it cross State Highway 29, three miles east of Marlow, with her, was Sheriff Wayne McKinney, Marlow Fire Chief Ryan Hall and county Emergency Management Director Gary Ball.
