Beavers gets a surprise

Named ‘someone you should know’ at Chamber event

DUNCAN — Kitty Beavers hadn’t been to a community breakfast hosted by the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry until Thursday. And at that point, she thought she was there to support her daughter.

It wasn’t until Don Howland got in front of those attending the breakfast and started talking about Beavers that she realized she was chosen as the Chamber’s “Someone You Should Know.”

“I am so surprised,” Beavers said. “My daughter said she was going to be recognized for OU Nursing.”

She said her daughter convinced her into attending the community breakfast without realizing she was being set up to receive the award. Each month, a person from the Duncan community is selected for the award, and each month, it’s kept a secret until the last moment.

Beavers said she was taken aback by the recognition.

“I’m shocked,” she said. “It’s a great honor.”

Beavers was recognized for her community involvement.

She has been a member of the Owl Study Club for 14 years, has received the national Jenny Award for volunteering for the southern region of the United States, is a representative for the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, is vice-chairwoman for the Oklahoma Woman’s Committee for Farm Bureau, volunteers and contributes to the Ronald McDonald House every year, organizes and volunteers at the Farm City Festival at the state capitol each year, volunteers at Food Check-Out Day, is a presenter for Ag in the Classroom, is a member of the Red River Technology Center advisory board, is a member of First Baptist Church and is on the church choir, and was a chairwoman of the Deacon’s Wives.

Beavers said she enjoys being involved in the community and feels she is called to take part in community organizations as her time will allow.

“It’s great to see some people appreciate it,” Beavers said.

She said she believes God has a plan for everyone, that everyone serves a purpose. For Beavers, her purpose is to promote agriculture.

“Agriculture is my passion,” Beavers said. “I feel like that’s why I’m here, to pass on the word.”
