DUNCAN —
As fall draws nearer, people will be crowding at the lakes to enjoy the last summer holiday, Labor Day.
And in Duncan, there are plenty of lakes for people to find adventure and fun at. Scott Vaughn, Duncan public utilities director, said the lakes are usually popular during the holiday because it’s one of the last times in the year families will be able to enjoy nice weather at the lakes.
“With the weather, it looks like we’re going to be busy,” Vaughn said. “It’s the last official holiday of the summer.”
Vaughn said the lakes are popular during the summer because people enjoy being outside when the weather is nice. He said people go to play in the water, take part in various lake activities, fishing, swimming and various reasons.
“It’s a good safe place to do that,” Vaughn said.
While many people may know about swimming, fishing, camping and boating at the lakes, Vaughn said there are many other activities for people to take part in.
Many of the more unusual items are located at Duncan Lake, Vaughn said. These activities range from horseback riding to disc golf to archery to several gun clubs.
“They’re concentrated at Duncan Lake,” Vaughn said.
He said he expects people to have fun at the lakes, although not all of the activities having to take place on or in the water.
For instance, all of the lakes make good areas for hiking, he said. He also said people should bring a lot of water when going on the hikes because they can turn into all day events.
But the exercise and the views make the hikes worth the effort, he said.
“At Humphreys, you get a view of the lake you don’t often get to see,” Vaughn said.
At Fuqua, there is a hiking path on the northwest side of the lake that can only be reached by boat. Vaughn said the trip is worth it, though.
“It’s really pretty cool,” Vaughn said. “It’s quite picturesque.”
