Last summer show for rabbits

Breeders association moves to three shows a year

DUNCAN — The Livestock Pavilion was filled to the brim with rabbit breeders as the Stephens County Rabbit Breeders Association played host to more than 1,200 rabbits Friday and Saturday at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center.

Association founder and president C.M. Carroll was surprised by the crowds that turned out for the last summer breeders show. The group has moved to a three show a year schedule, losing the summer show starting next year.

“I had no idea how big the crowd would be today,” Carroll said. “For how hot it is inside this building, there are a lot of people that turned out.”

With the pavilion filled with approximately 1,200 rabbits and hundreds of attendees, the breeders had to make extra efforts to cool down their rabbits from the heat.

Susan Yeary set up multiple fans, arranged to cool the stacks of rabbit cages she brought in from Edinburg, Texas. She has participated in the summer show in the past couple of years and is sad to see the show disappear.

“C.M. puts on a great show and I love    coming up to Oklahoma to visit with other rabbit enthusiasts,” Yeary said. “I really enjoy this show and I was about to cry when I found out their not going to put one on next year.”

This rabbit breeders show kicked off the summer season, Yeary said, with other shows not starting up until Labor Day or later in the season.

The judges for the show on average rate about 250 rabbits per day, as dictated by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, show volunteer Sue Monahon said.

“Each rabbit is judged by correct sex, how their toenails are clipped and no unwanted spots,” Monahon said. “The judges look for the best example of breeds for body type and to help place them.”

The next rabbit breeder’s show will be Sept. 2 - 3 at the fair and expo center.
