Five boat docks to be installed at Duncan lakes

DUNCAN — The City of Duncan is installing five boat docks, strategically placing each near the lake concession stands.

Scott Vaughn, Public Works director, said the boat dock project is being paid in part by an Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation grant. Duncan, Fuqua and Humphreys lakes will each have one dock, while Clear Creek Lake will have two docks.

The grant covers more than $164,000 to place the five docks at the lakes. The city is paying $80,000 for site work at each of the lakes to prepare for the docks.

“They are all replacing old boat docks, except for the second one at Clear Creek, which is next to a ramp than hasn’t had a boat dock.”

The project required the city to commit to some work, including adding ADA accessible parking space at each dock.

Once site work is completed at each site, which Vaughn said is the case, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has to review the site work to make sure it is done to completion. Once verified, the docks will be ordered. So far, three docks have been ordered and site work has been completed at the two remaining lakes.

Vaughn said it will take 90 days after the docks have been ordered for them to arrive.

The first three docks were ordered in August and probably won’t arrive until November.

The other two docks probably won’t arrive until December or January.

“It’s coming,” Vaughn said. “It’s in writing.”

The boat dock project is part of the 2010 Lakes Master Plan and has been budgeted as a Capital Improvement project.

It is with the Capital Improvement Funds the City of Duncan will pay for the $80,000 worth of site work.

“We’re achieving elements of our Master Plan,” he said. “Luckily, we were able to get a grant from the state to help us do so.”

Although the addition of the docks has only been on the Lakes Master Plan since 2010, Vaughn said the Duncan Lakes Authority members have been wanting to replace the docks for years.

“Those docks were probably built in the ’70s,” Vaughn said. “It’s long past needing something do to them.”

The next step is to get the site work reviewed at Duncan and Humphreys to get the next docks ordered.

“It’s definitely a good thing,” Vaughn said.

    The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.

    Labyer said the school district will look to improve its procedures.

  • Duncan students to remain in school Tuesday, Wednesday
    When Duncan seniors cross the stage tonight, they won’t necessarily be done with high school.
    Duncan students will go to school Tuesday and Wednesday, following a three-day weekend for Memorial Day. DHS Assistant Principal Merry Stone said those two days are regular school days for students.

    National EMS Week, May 19-25, is about connecting with the community and the Air Evac Lifeteam was doing just that.

    From IHOP and HomeTown Buffet to Chili’s and Olive Garden, restaurant whisperings have been running rampant in the community since the arrival of Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar.
    Although there are a few open spaces such as the old Golden Corral location and the soon-to-close Honda site, none of these rumors can be confirmed at this point according to Chris Deal, Duncan Chamber of Commerce president. No information on any of the businesses’ websites points to them opening a new location in the area.
