SRT warrant offers up one, but no guns

Local man arrested on outstanding felonies

DUNCAN — Some police raids take considerable planning, and then there are those that officers must act on quickly. That was the case Tuesday when information came across the Duncan Police detectives division about stolen guns from a burglary Saturday. It was believed the items could be at a Duncan residence.

Even though the guns weren’t found, officers arrested Randall Dean Smith Jr., 19, of Duncan on outstanding felony warrants in Stephens County.

DPD Sgt. Brian Attaway said the Special Response Team (SRT) executed the search warrant on a house in the 1400 block of East Chestnut and arrested Smith.

“There were two other people who lived there but had nothing to do with this. They cooperated and were released,” he said.

Attaway said when the information came into the DPD, detectives quickly prepared a search warrant and had it approved through Stephens County District Court for the residence in hopes of finding the stolen items.

“It was in reference to a burglary on Saturday, where some ammunition and guns were taken from an address on L Street,” Attaway said Wednesday.

It was believed the stolen items could be in the home, he said.

Det. John Byers, who was in charge of the warrant, said some items were recovered.

“Well, the search warrant went well but not as good as it could have been,” he said. “I did recover some evidence and am still working on the case and the suspects are all juveniles.”

Byers said there have been some burglaries in the area of Chestnut from First Street to N St., and also on Mosely Drive that may all be connected and investigations are continuing.

Before that warrant was executed though, Attaway said they had to do a threat assessment on the residence and the suspects met the criteria.

“At the time, it was unknown how many were going to be there. We attempted phone contact with them, to which there was no response, then knocked on the door to announce we were there,” he said.

Attaway said he wasn’t sure that Smith was the suspect they were looking for, but his previous felony warrants for false declaration at a pawn shop and knowingly receiving stolen property was all that was needed to put Smith in custody.

“Detectives found a few things of interest, but whether or not those were involved with the burglaries is why the investigation is still ongoing,” Attaway said.

About 16 officers from the SRT, administration and detectives division were involved in Tuesday’s search warrant process.
