Drama students to act up in Fuqua Park for WLGS

DUNCAN — With the idea of enlisting more community support, Shep Pamplin and the Duncan High drama students have set their sights on the World’s Largest Garage Sale and SummerFest.

Pamplin, DHS drama teacher, and his students will be featured guests during this year’s SummerFest. This is the first year the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry has added an International Day to the festivities, and the group is set to be a part of it. SummerFest is Friday and Saturday in Fuqua Park

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to draw more people,” Pamplin said.

During the event, the DHS students will be dressed in costumes from previous shows, and they are slated to have a sword fighting demonstration in the park gazebo.

Pamplin said the drama team gets a lot of support from family, friends and the school district.

But his goal for the coming school year is to increase the community’s involvement.

“It’s about reaching into the community and sharing,” he said. “Community involvement is important.”

For the first performance of the school year, the students are working on a contest piece, “Piece of My Heart,” which focuses on the involvement of women in Vietnam.

This isn’t the only performance piece scheduled for the first semester.

The students will also act in an evening of one-act play. And they will perform in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

“My kids put a lot work into a show,” Pamplin said. “I love my kids, their sense of dedication, hard work. It’s very fulfilling. It justifies what I do.”

He said the best part of working with high school students is seeing how excited they get when they’re working on performance material or going out into the community to interact with new faces.

Pamplin said SummerFest will provide the students with an opportunity to show the community what they do.

It will give them a chance to talk about the DHS drama program, while letting people know about the upcoming performances.

“They can talk all about what they’re learning,” he said. “They have to do it. Community interest can just grow and grow.”

The World’s Largest Garage Sale and SummerFest is just set one to getting more community involvement, Pamplin said.

In October, the students will have their annual haunted house.

Pamplin has more ideas how to get community attention, namely putting the students in situations where they’re more visible to Duncan and area residents.

He has a goal to eventually have free performances in the park.

“Anything that puts these kids in front of the public is very important,” Pamplin said.
