Area artists confined to 6x6-inch squares for Duncan Art Guild's unique show

Canvases on display at Celebration Frames, reception happens Saturday

DUNCAN — Artists throughout the community have created small 6-inch by -6-inch works of art that are now on display at a local business for the Duncan Art Guild’s 6x6 Canvas Celebration. The show opened Wednesday, but the big reception happens Saturday night.

The community can view the finished works of art and also will have a chance to bid on ones that catch their eye, during the 6x6 Canvas Celebration and Gala that allows for a final chance at silent bidding from 6:06 to 8:06 p.m. at Celebration Frames, 1102 W. Oak.

Deadline to return the canvases was Tuesday. All canvases are available to see at Celebration Frames from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. But if someone has their eye on a certain artwork, they need to attend the reception that evening for the final bidding process.

“This is the first time for us to do this,” said Jolene Loyd-Forbes, show coordinator and Guild member. “We were trying to come up with something new that we could get public artists involved in.”

The Guild ended up handing out 60 canvases to a total of 35-40 artists. Most, if not all, of these will be able to be bid on.

The artists were told to be creative and they could use oil, acrylic, textile, jewelry, photo, collages, decoupage, wire wrap or any media. Some of the more interesting ones that had been turned in by Tuesday were one with a wooden duck on it, one covered completely in wood and one that looks 3D.

“We wanted them to turn their imaginations loose,” said Loyd-Forbes.

All funds from the auction will go to the Art Guild for future events such as the 6x6 Canvas Celebrations. Loyd-Forbes hopes they can host another similar event in the near future. Any unsold work from this event will be held by the Guild for future fundraisers.

With this being the first 6x6 event the Guild has hosted, there are high hopes for its success.

“We’re excited because there are a lot of people who are not artists but belong to the guild who have entered,” said Loyd-Forbes. “There is some of mixed media coming in and we have a lot of different people.”

The celebration and gala also offers the artists and community to mix and mingle with one another and possibly get more residents interested and involved in the guild.

“We hope everyone comes out to the gala,” Loyd-Forbes said. “It’s a time to visit and meet the artists.”

  • Commissioners discuss temporary fix to courthouse air conditioning issues

    The Board of Stephens County Commissioners held an emergency meeting Thursday to find a temporary solution for cooling off the courthouse, until a new system can be installed. Commissioners approved a temporary solution from Allied Services in Ardmore and will rent an air conditioning unit for $10,000 for the first month and $7,000 for the second month. The commissioners estimate it will take about two months for any company to get a new Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system in stock.

  • Duncan students to remain in school Tuesday, Wednesday
    When Duncan seniors cross the stage tonight, they won’t necessarily be done with high school.
    Duncan students will go to school Tuesday and Wednesday, following a three-day weekend for Memorial Day. DHS Assistant Principal Merry Stone said those two days are regular school days for students.

  • Restaurant rumors remain on the hot plate

    From IHOP and HomeTown Buffet to Chili’s and Olive Garden, restaurant whisperings have been running rampant in the community since the arrival of Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar.
    Although there are a few open spaces such as the old Golden Corral location and the soon-to-close Honda site, none of these rumors can be confirmed at this point according to Chris Deal, Duncan Chamber of Commerce president. No information on any of the businesses’ websites points to them opening a new location in the area.
