Comanche OK’s splash pad

DUNCAN — More than a dozen residents showed up to the Comanche City Council meeting to show their support for the proposed splash pad, which was approved by the council members Tuesday night.

The council members awarded the bid to Power Play, a company out of Bixby for the proposed 2,000 square feet splash pad, City Manager Wilt Brown said.

“We started talking about it back in May and sought out bids and it was discussed in July,” Brown said. “Except for one (local) person, no one else showed up back then and it was tabled.”

The splash pad is currently scheduled to be installed at Kinder Park, on the west side of the city.

Brown saw an increase in chatter about the proposed splash pad and a desire from the residents to discuss it again, with the social network Facebook cited as an example where communication was visible.

He was asked by a council member to put it back on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting and Brown estimated nearly 20 people were present to show support for the project.

“What they had to say was the splash pad would make us a destination point and not a pass through area,” Brown said. “With no swimming pool, it would be good for kids of all ages and they wouldn’t have to drive out of town to enjoy one.”

Brown believes more people from surrounding areas like Corum, Empire, Meridian and more could travel to Comanche to use the splash pad and by proxy, increase business around the city.

There is no start or completion date set for construction of the splash pad but after communication starts up again with Power Play, dates will be discussed.

A special meeting is being planned for Aug. 23 for discussion about seeking new bids for the sewer lagoon upgrade project. It will help address financial concerns with a representative from Municipal Finance Service present to talk about options for funding the sewer project.

The project seeks to rectify a number of issues filed by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and how to best proceed in tackling the various parts of the project.
