Parade winners named

Girl Scout Troop 514 takes top honor

DUNCAN — Girl Scout Troop 514 was named best overall float in Duncan’s Christmas parade on Saturday down Main Street, showing its stuff to a standing-room-only crowd.

Winners of the best theme category were Noble Energy, first; Cub Scout Pack 417, second; and Dance Academy of Duncan, third.

The best display by a civic organization was put on by Velma 4-H Club.

Winners in the antique car division were Clyde John, whose vehicle sported a Christmas theme, first; and Steve Stapp and R&S; Drug Coffee Club, with an antique fire pickup, second. Not only did Tammy Johnson, Main Street Duncan director, succeed at getting more entries in this year’s parade, she also acquired more prizes and prize money for the program. Last year, Main Street Duncan got $4,300 in cash and prizes. This year, the amount went up to $8,500.

The money and prizes were divided between parade-entry winners and people participating in the Gingerbread Dough competition, which followed the parade.

Zela Luce of Meridian caught the $500 ball in the Gingerbread Dough event, which featured more than 500 numbered table tennis balls being tossed into the crowd. Each number corresponded to a prize. This is the second year for the giveaway. Luce was presented a check by Kevin Hook, publisher of The Duncan Banner.

The happy winner said she planned to buy Christmas presents with her windfall and donate them to Indian Territory Hospice.

The parade featured 158 entries, some with multiple vehicles, Johnson said. The parade lasted nearly two hours and played to a packed crowd lining the streets of the route.

“The people are thick,” a jubilant Johnson said Saturday.

“It’s awesome. Fantabulous.”
