DUNCAN —
Heroes were catapulted into the spotlight when the most horrific act of terrorism took place on American soil in Sept. 11, 2001.
Firefighters, medical personnel and law enforcement were at the forefront of the rescue efforts. But it wasn’t just those wearing a uniform or a badge that were heroes. Ultimately, it was every person affected by those tragic events. And Duncan Chamber of Commerce immediately saw a need to honor its own local heroes of Duncan and the county. So a luncheon was created and this is the ninth year for the event.
“It’s simply a feel good event to thank our heroes,” said Program Director Laurie Baldwin.
“We gather annually to honor and celebrate the men and women that make a difference in our lives.”
This year’s Heroes Luncheon reservations are being taken up to Tuesday. All heroes get to eat lunch for free, but Duncan Chamber of Commerce is needing a head count, and those who do not fall in the hero classification will have to pay for their lunches. The free lunch is for police, fire, sheriff, other law enforcement, emergency medical personnel and both retired and active military. The lunch begins at noon at the Simmons Center. It is a buffet service and there will be entertainment. On this year’s schedule is the 9th and 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, and a performance from Duncan High School’s show choir, “Reflections.”
Keynote speaker will be Duncan’s own Cindi Broaddus, who, in June 2001, was the victim of a crime that changed her life. Had it not been for the rescue personnel and medical personnel, Broaddus might not be able to share her story this week. Broaddus was traveling in a vehicle when someone threw a gallon of acid off an overpass. It crashed through the windshield of the car. Broaddus will share her story about overcoming tragedy and becoming triumphant.
Call the Chamber at 255-3644 to make a reservation.
